Wolverines lose hard fought game to Blizzard

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines and Northern Manitoba Blizzard played a tight first two periods, before a couple turnovers led the Blizz to a 3-2 win on Saturday night.

Two goals in less than a minute in the third period gave Norman the room they needed to come away with a win over the Wolverines.

The Wolverines got on the board early when Griffin Ayotte, against his former team, scored his second goal of the season just 3:27 into the game.

Before halfway through the period though, Isaac Tomchak was able to tip a puck by Jase Wareham to tie the game.

In the second period, no goals were scored, and the shots were 11-10 for Norman.

But in the third period, the Blizzard got off to a quick start.

Lucas De la Salle was able to turnover the puck and the blue line, and go in for a breakaway where he was able to tuck it by Wareham for a 2-1 lead.

Just under a minute later, it was Marlen Edwards who got his fourth of the season to make it 3-1.

The Wovlerines pressed the rest of the way, but it wasn’t until 3:20 left in the game where Ayotte scored his second of the game on the powerplay to make it a one goal game.

But that’s how close the Wolverines could get, as they dropped their third game of the season.

Wareham stopped 29 saves in the loss, while Alex Reedy stopped 36 shots in the win, and got the first star of the game.

The Wolverines struggled on the powerplay, going 1/8 with the man advantage, but was able to shut the door on the penalty kill, stopping all four of the Blizzard’s powerplays.

The Wolverines will now take on the Neepawa Titans on Tuesday at 12:30pm, for the annual School Game at the Waywayseecappo Arena.
